How to Avoid Getting Scammed When Moving

As a mover, we hate when we hear that people are getting scammed by tricksters in our industry. We try to be an advocate for our customers and educate them on what to look for when hiring a mover, so that you don’t get stuck in a bad place on moving day. Here are some definite red flags when comparing moving companies.

Missing Information

If you aren’t getting a referral directly from a friend, be sure to do your homework. Ask about their insurance and licensing and if they’re a ProMover (an association of movers that abide by a series of ethical standards). Be sure to check for ratings, reviews and ask about specific situations and how they would handle them.

Only Do Online Estimates

Yes, we are in a tech-savvy world where everything is quick and easy. But, if a company says they ONLY do online estimates. Run, run as fast as you can. This is a big red flag. The best companies offer both – well, because online estimates are still not super accurate.

You Can’t Get a Straight Answer

When you get your estimate be sure to ask what is included. Many times low-ball estimates are non-binding meaning they can go up (and you can be charged anything) on moving day. Ask if the estimate is “binding” and if there is a guaranteed threshold for increase on moving day – IF, by chance, their estimate was off or you decide you do want to move that piano. Be sure you understand everything you’re signing.

They Can’t Explain What’s Covered

Ask the moving company about their claims rate. A claimed rate is defined as how often a customer has to file a claim with their company because of damaged goods. Be sure you totally understand the insurance (or in moving terms “valuation”) that is included in your estimate. Many people decided they want to buy-up so that high-cost items are covered in case damaged. Be sure to know all of your options and liability.
