Old Brainerd Landfill Now an Outdoor Fitness Hot Spot

Families Walking On Path Holding Hands Smiling

Minnesota is serious about fitness, its no wonder it always ranks well for one of the healthiest states in the U.S.

Case in point – the city of Brainerd has turned a 1970s landfill into an arboretum, which has now been turned into a walking path and outdoor fitness hot spot.

The Northland Arboretum, which offers visitors thousands of beautiful nature trails, has now opened up an area with numerous stainless steel upper-body workout stations. This is the first phase of the fitness trail, which will eventually include stations for stretching, balance and strength.

The really great part about this new area is that there’s an interactive app you can download, which will show you an exercise illustration for each station. It will also track your progress through each exercise and give you a total number of calories burned at the end.

Plus, visiting the Arboretum is way cheaper than a gym membership – you can get an annual pass for $20 or a one-time pass for $5.

People have raved about the new area and enjoy working out in the fresh air. After you get finished with your upper-body work out, you can head over to another trail for walking, running, biking or cross-country skiing.
